Restylane Fillers
Restylane ® is one of the newest injectable, non-surgical facial treatments designed to slow and hide the effects of aging. Restylane® filler injections are composed of a clear hyaluronic acid-based gel that not only fills in lines and wrinkles in the face, but also adds moisture and lubrication to the skin, making it feel younger and more comfortable.
What is Restylane®?
Restylane ® is a clear, non-animal-based, biodegradable gel that is composed of hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in the body. Originally developed in Sweden, Restylane® filler injections are now marketed in the United States by Medicis, a leading pharmaceutical company that offers a wide range of other skin treatments. Restylane® is created from tissue cultivated in a laboratory, and is an excellent alternative to other fillers such as collagen and Hylaform®, which are both derived from animal products.
What areas can be treated with Restylane®?
Virtually any area of facial skin can be treated with Restylane® dermal filler. Creases, deep folds, and light wrinkles can all be lessened through the use of Restylane®. Laugh lines and fine mouth lines are among the most popular targets for the injections. Enhancement of facial contours, usually accomplished with the larger particle size versions of Restylane®, is also possible. Sagging under the eyes, under-projected cheekbones, and recessive chins are often treated with this advanced hyaluronic acid formula. Among other popular applications of Restylane® is its use as a lip filler, where it can enhance volume and shape for months after treatment. In short, any area of the face that lacks volume, shape, or smoothness can experience improvement through Restylane® injections.
Restylane is indicated for mid-to-deep dermal implantation for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds. Restylane is also indicated for submucosal implantation for lip augmentation in patients over the age of 21.
Restylane is formulated as a clear gel and uses a dual mechanism of action to correct moderate to severe wrinkles and folds. Upon being injected beneath the skin's surface, Restylane gel integrates into dermal tissue then attracts and binds to water molecules to help maintain volume. Restylane is gradually degraded by the body's own mechanism and disappears without any residue. Results can be seen immediately following Restylane treatment and for up to six months. Some patients may achieve results that last longer than six months, depending upon injection site.
When should I plan treatment for ideal results?
It is recommended that you receive treatment 2-4 weeks before you want/need the results for a specific event on your calendar.
How long does it last?
The average Restylane treatment lasts between six and nine months, with lip treatments lasting between three and four months. Tear trough treatments last the longest due to lack of movement in the area (results can last a year or longer).
Are Restylane injections painful?
Restylane contains lidocaine, a local anesthetic that improves comfort in the area of treatment. A topical anesthetic may also be applied to the area prior to receiving your treatment, essentially creating a pain-free treatment.
Will I bruise post treatment?
Patients taking medications with anticoagulant effects, such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, and Celebrex or high doses of certain herbs such as gingko, vitamin E, garlic or ginseng may have an increased risk of bleeding or bruising. If possible, it is advised to discontinue these medications two weeks prior to treatment. If you can’t, the procedure can still be done, but with higher risk of bruising.
Can I combine Restylane with Dysport?
Dysport treatment, or any other neurotoxin treatment, can be combined with injectable fillers at the same appointment. Using both products helps most clients achieve their ideal result and may provide longer-lasting results.
Is there a cost for a consultation?
To see Dr. Cheema, the cost for your skin consultation is $50. This consultation fee is applied to your account to use towards your injections at C'est La Vie Day Spa.
TREATMENT GUIDELINES
Pre treatment:
-
Patients predisposed to developing cold sores should start on 500mg of Valtrex twice daily at least 2 days before treatment. A 7 day course of therapy is recommended (2 days prior and 5 days following filler).
-
Patients taking medications with anticoagulant effects, such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, and Celebrex or high doses of certain herbs such as gingko, vitamin E, garlic or ginseng may have an increased risk of bleeding or bruising. If possible, it is advised to discontinue these medications two weeks prior to treatment. If you can’t, the procedure can still be done, but with higher risk of bruising.
Post treatment:
-
There may be slight to moderate swelling and redness in the injected area for 24-48 hours. Avoid applying immediate pressure and excessive movements to the treated area, unless instructed to do so.
-
Apply a cool compress to treated area/s as this may help to reduce swelling and potential for bruising.
-
Tylenol may be taken for any discomfort and cold compresses may be lightly applied to reduce swelling.
-
It is normal to feel some “tenderness” immediately following the treatment that may last for a few hours up to a few days and some “firmness” in your treated area/s. Over, time the areas will soften and “settle” leaving a natural look.
-
There is a small potential for the filler to not disperse evenly and form a small “nodule”. Typically a nodule cannot be seen but you may be able to feel it. If this occurs and is bothersome, please call us to book a follow up appointment. The nodule may be a lingering bruise not requiring treatment, however if a true nodule has formed we may be able to evenly disperse the product.
